Numerus Fixus

For courses where there is excessive demand, Dutch university places are limited by Numerus Fixus, meaning that there are a fixed number of places available.

Most of the courses taught in English are not subject to Numerus Fixus. The exceptions are in subjects such as medical science, physiotherapy and law. We have tried to indicate throughout the site which courses are subject to Numerus Fixus.

You can only apply for one course that is subject to Numerus Fixus through Studielink at a time.

Places on Numerus Fixus courses are allocated on the basis of a lottery rather than according to your A’ level grades.

There are two basic forms of lottery: the centralised lottery which is administered by Studielink, and the decentralised lottery, where the individual university you are applying to can exercise some discretion in terms of the students it selects. As the lottery can be a relatively complicated process it is recommended that you contact the university directly to understand how it will work in your case.
